GEYSERGUARD: STOP BURSTS, SAVE MILLIONS
Geyser bursts are South Africa’s top home insurance claim, causing costly damage to ceilings, carpets, and furniture—often exceeding the geyser’s replacement cost.
GeyserGuard revolutionizes water heating with patented technology, extending geyser life, delivering ultra-early failure warnings, and saving homeowners and insurers millions.
CAUSES OF GEYSER FAILURE
1. Corrosion
Water naturally corrodes a geyser’s steel tank.
However, a sacrificial anode—a magnesium or aluminum rod—takes the hit, protecting the tank.
This anode lasts 3–5 years, depending on water quality, but must be inspected every 1–3 years.
If it’s over 50% consumed, tank rust accelerates, risking a costly burst.

2. Thermostat Switching Failure
Traditional thermostats switch at random voltages (±230V), causing sparks that degrade the mechanism—like a spark plug wearing out in a car.
These sparks shorten the thermostat and element’s lifespan, leading to overheating or failure..

A brand new spark plug, boxed in 1950 will still work if placed in a motor today.
Every time the plug sparks, the life of the spark plug deteriorates.

SABS STANDARDS
SABS Standard
A geyser has to be able to switch on and off a certain number of times in order to meet the SABS standard for the life of geyser elements, Sans 514, in order to use the SABS mark.
Clearly, switching can take place anywhere between +230 volts and –230 volts.
Switching at max voltage is what causes the greatest reduction in the life of a geyser.
As the switching take place at lesser voltages, the negative effect on the life of the element gets progressively less and less until the zero-point voltage is reached where there is no negative effect on the life of the element.
Currently, the thermostat, which does the switching, does so completely randomly, so the chances of it switching at, or even close to zero voltage is infinitesimal.

SPIKING
From a technical perspective, it must be noted that the LSS system, does not randomly break the flow of current, which could cause “spiking”, but switches at the “Zero Point Crossing.”
This is the point in the cycle where no power is flowing, so the flow of current is already off when the switching takes place.

GEYSERGUARD TO THE RESCUE
GeyserGuard tackles both failure causes with cutting-edge innovation:
1. Ultra-Early Anode Warnings
GeyserGuard’s patented anode life-sensing technology detects depletion well before failure, sending alerts via email and SMS to homeowners, insurers, and our control server. Replace the anode for ~R200, avoiding a R25,000 claim

2. Zero-Point Switching
Unlike random switching that causes “spiking” and damage, GeyserGuard switches only at the zero-voltage point—where no power flows. This eliminates sparks, vastly extending thermostat and element life, and surpasses SABS standards (SANS 514).

INSURANCE GAME-CHANGER
Geyser bursts drive the highest household insurance claims in South Africa, with collateral damage inflating costs far beyond the geyser itself. GeyserGuard’s early warnings and fail-proof switching slash these claims, delivering unmatched value:
For Homeowners:
Prevent floods, avoid repair hassles, and enjoy peace of mind with a longer-lasting geyser.
Avoid insurance excess claims.
For Insurers:
Replace anodes proactively for R200 instead of paying R25,000 claims, reducing the industry’s biggest loss driver.

Which insurance company would not like to reduce their claims?!
OPPORTUNITY FOR INSURERS
We invite insurance companies to partner with PowerPulse Innovations and promote and possibly mandate GeyserGuard installations, unlocking four transformative benefits:
